Woman Dies of Apparent Drowning in Wainscott

Rough water and strong currents returned to East End beaches this week.

UPDATE: East Hampton Town Police have identified the woman pulled from the ocean as Elizabeth A. Hummer, 58, of Wainscott. While an exact cause of death has not been determined, according to East Hampton Town Capt. Christopher L. Anderson, investigators do not believe circumstances are suspicious.

ORIGINAL STORY:

East Hampton Town Police in conjunction with the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the death of a woman who was pulled from the ocean just west of Beach Lane in Wainscott on Saturday.

Emergency service personnel were called to the scene at approximately 2:36 p.m. following reports of an unresponsive woman who was pulled from the water by another beachgoer. Efforts to revive the woman, whose name was being withheld until her family was notified, were unsuccessful at which time she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding the incident are urged to contact the town police at 631-537-7575.
