After securing a win in Game 2 of a best-of-three game playoff series at Mashashimuet Park on Friday, the Sag Harbor Whalers were knocked out of the postseason by the top-ranked Riverhead Tomcats, who advanced to face the Long Island Road Warriors this week for the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League Championship.
Riverhead grinded out a 4-1 victory over Sag Harbor in Calverton on Saturday. Riverhead’s Louis Antos (Queens) hit a solo home run in the first inning off Whalers starter Milton Vrionis (St. Mary’s – CA.), and Xavier Vargas (Rhode Island) scored in the second inning to give the Tomcats a quick 2-0 lead. The Tomcats tacked on two more runs in the third, which was all they would need as the Riverhead bullpen allowed just a single run scored by Brandon Miller (St. John’s) in the top of the fourth inning.
Riverhead won Game 1 of the championships series, 8-2, on Monday with Game 2 scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, and Game 3 set for Wednesday, if necessary.
Sag Harbor ended its most successful season in 10 years with a 19-20-5 record.
