About That Time for Free Shakespeare in the Park

HTH King Lear

Inspired by the legacy of Joseph Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival, Hip to Hip Theatre Company was founded in 2007 with the aim of producing free, family friendly, professional productions of popular classics in public spaces.

For Southampton, that means “Free Shakespeare in the Park” — the company’s flagship program, staging Friday, August 24, with “King Lear” and Saturday, August 25, with “All’s Well That Ends Well” in Agawam Park, located at 23 Main Street.

Before each performance, the company will host its children’s workshop, “Kids & the Classics,” featuring theater games teaching the tenets of ensemble playing and the style and language of William Shakespeare’s plays, starting at 7 p.m. for ages 5 to 12.

Each performance starts at 7:30 p.m. on the lawn adjacent to the Veteran’s Memorial, and admission is free — no lines, no tickets, seating is first come, first served. Bring blankets, low chairs and picnic fare. Rain location is the Southampton Cultural Center, located at 25 Pond Lane. For more information, visit hiptohip.org.
