The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company announced on Monday that it would buy 25 A&P or Waldbaum stores on Long Island for $146 million, including those in East Hampton and Southampton.
The deal was announced after the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company filed bankruptcy on Sunday and is subject to the approval of a bankruptcy judge.
“We are very happy to have the opportunity to expand our presence in greater New York and serve new customers,” said Don Sussman, Stop & Shop’s New York Metro Division president, in a release. “We look forward to providing customers with delivering unmatched selection, quality and value that they have come to expect from Stop & Shop.”
The Stop & Shop Supermarket Company has 394 stores in the Northeast. The deal is expected to close by the end of the year.
