A Springs man is facing a felony animal cruelty charge after allegedly killing a dog belonging to a family member on Sunday.

East Hampton Town Police detectives arrested Jose J. Galvez-Garcia, 21, on Monday afternoon, saying he took a four-year-old cockapoo named Simba from a relative’s house in East Hampton, then choked and repeatedly stabbed the dog to death. According to a press release issued by police Tuesday, Mr. Galvez-Garcia allegedly committed the crime in a secluded area off of Breeze Hill Road and then left the dog’s body in the wooded area approximately 50 feet from the road.

Police said Mr. Galvez-Garcia told investigators he killed the dog because he “was angry with the way he had been treated by a family member who owned the dog.” Mr. Galvez-Garcia is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony. He was held overnight Monday, awaiting arraignment at East Hampton Justice Court on Tuesday.

Detectives have asked anyone with information to call the police department at (631) 537-7575. Calls will be kept confidential.
