Sports Wrap: Travel Volleyball, Pierson Baseball and Softball Lose, Perello Scores Six


Travel Volleyball Team Readies for Regional Tournament

The 16s team of the Long Island Blaze Volleyball Club competed over the weekend of April 13 and 14 in the Rhode Island Rumble at the Providence Rhode Island Convention Center. The team will compete in the Garden Empire Volleyball Association (GEVA) 16 Club Regionals at Hofstra University this Sunday, May 5. Whalers Drop Opener to Port Jefferson

The Pierson boys baseball team won its first two games of a three-game set with Hampton Bays, but lost game three, 7-4, at Hampton Bays on April 25 before going on to also drop the opening game of a three-game series with Port Jefferson at Mashashimuet Park on Monday. The game was tight going into the fifth inning with a pitcher’s duel between Pierson’s Dan Labrozzi and Port Jeff starter Luke Filippi, who ultimately lasted six innings without allowing a single run. The Royals scored twice in the firth inning and once in both the sixth and seventh innings to pull away as the Whalers dropped to 2-8 in League VIII, and 4-8 overall.

The second game of the Port Jefferson series was played Wednesday after press time, with game three scheduled back at Mashashimuet Park on Friday, May 3, at 4:30 p.m.

Softball Team Also Falls to Port Jeff

With Sam Cox pitching for injured starter Lauren Gurney, the Pierson/Bridgehampton/Shelter Island softball team jumped out to a 3-1 lead over visiting Port Jefferson on Monday, only to let the game slip away with three runs allowed in the fifth inning and two more in the seventh. Abby Rolfe pitched a complete game for the Lady Royals, allowing ten hits but just one walk while striking out 10.

The Lady Whalers (3-7) took on Southampton Wednesday after press time and will travel to the North Fork on Friday, May 3, to play Southold/Greenport at 4 p.m. Pierson’s final home game of the season is scheduled for this Monday, May 6, against Mattituck at 4 p.m. The regular season ends with a game at Center Moriches on May 8.

Perello Scores Six Goals in Loss

Pierson’s Grace Perello continued her strong season by scoring six goals and assisting on another in a 16-9 loss for the East Hampton girls lacrosse team against Elwood/John Glenn on Tuesday. The Lady Bonackers played at Pierson High School on Tuesday but have had a tough run through Division II play this season and dropped to 1-11 overall as a result of the loss.  Pierson senior Sophia Bitis scored a goal on Tuesday and now has only three games remaining in her high school career. East Hampton will play at East Islip (5/2) and at Kings Park (5/6) before closing out the season at home on May 9 against Comsewogue.
