Sports Wrap: Hoops Teams Lose to Start Season, Duryea Named Swim Captain

Duryea Named Captain of Swim Team

Pierson senior Ryan Duryea has been named a captain of the East Hampton boys swim team, which includes several Pierson swimmers. Duryea will captain the team along with East Hampton seniors Ryan Bahel, Ethan McCormac and Jordan Uribe. The team kicked off its new season on Wednesday after press time with a home meet against Ward Melville, and will have three straight road meets against Lindenhurst, Central Islip and Deer Park before returning home to face North Babylon on January 4 at 5 p.m.

Down Two Starters, Lady Whalers Lose

 The Pierson/Bridgehampton girls basketball team lost its season opener, 59-36, on November 29 with seniors Katie Kneeland and Paige Schaefer both out with injuries. Chastin Giles scored 13 points to lead the Lady Whalers and Celia Barranco had 10. The Lady Whalers played at Harborfields on Wednesday after press time and will host Center Moriches on Wednesday, December 12, at 6:15 p.m.

Brooks Scores 31 in Loss

Henry Brooks kicked off a new season of Pierson boys basketball with a 31-point performance at Shelter Island on Saturday, December 1, but it was not enough as the Indians pushed through a 70-62 victory in the first of three meetings with the Whalers this season. Peter Schaefer added 12 points for Pierson and Cooper Schiavoni had nine. The game was tied 48-48 going into the fourth quarter, which Shelter Island closed out with a commanding performance led by Dan Martin, who had 24 points, and Lucas Quigley-Dunning, who had 22.

Pierson played at Westhampton on Wednesday and will play two more non-league road games at Shoreham/Wading River on Saturday at noon and at Hampton Bays on Monday at 6:15 p.m.
