Sports Wrap 4/14/16: Schleichers Score Six Each, Baseball and Softball Struggle

Schleichers Lead Teams to Victories

Pierson senior Jack Schleicher had six goals and four assists to lead the Southampton/Pierson boys lacrosse team to a 15-7 win over Copiague on Saturday. Jack Brown, a Pierson junior, had two goals and two assists. The Mariners (2-2) will play at home under lights on Thursday, April 14 against Port Jefferson at 7 p.m.

Jack’s sister, Hollie, also had a big game this week, scoring the game-winner for the East Hampton girls team on Monday in a 12-11 win over Center Moriches. Schleicher led all scorers with six goals as East Hampton picked up its first win of the season.

Up-and-Down Week for Softball 

The Pierson softball team fell to 2-5 following a 15-3 loss to McGann-Mercy on Monday. Prior to that game, the Lady Whalers fell, 20-7, to Mattituck on April 6 before returning home for a 25-4 victory over visiting Shelter Island.

Annabelle Schroeder pitched five innings and struck out four, while Isabella DiRussa went 4-for-4 at the plate with 5 RBIs and 5 runs scored. Cali Cafiero was also 4-for-4, had seven RBI’s, seven stolen bases and two runs scored. Leigh Hatfield also had a strong day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs.

Pierson played at Center Moriches on Tuesday and at Babylon on Wednesday, and will return home to play Southampton on Friday, April 15 at 4 p.m. before traveling to Shelter Island for an 11 a.m. game on Saturday.

Baseball Swept by Southold 

The Pierson baseball team lost three straight to rival Southold last week, dropping the team to 3-3 in the middle of the League VIII standings. After losing the first two games by the same score of 4-3, the Whalers traveled to Southold and lost, 12-7, on April 8. The team was scheduled to begin a three-game series with Greenport at home on Tuesday, with games 2 and 3 scheduled for Thursday, April 14 at Greenport at 4 p.m. and April 15 at home at 4:30 p.m.
