Collegiate Baseball Season Begins

The Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League opened its season over the weekend, with the Sag Harbor Whalers splitting a pair of games. The Whalers lost their opener, 8-3, to Southampton on Saturday before going on to knock off Westhampton, 5-1, on Sunday.

Joe Gellenbeck (Xavier) hit a pinch-hit, two-run homer to break a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning against Westhampton, while pitchers Ian Searles (Southern New Hampshire), Tyler Manez (Elon) and Mitchell Kuebbing (Longwood) combined to limit the host Aviators to just five hits. Next up for the Whalers are two away games against the North Fork tomorrow, June 6, at 7 p.m. and against Southampton on Saturday at 5 p.m. The team will return home to Mashashimuet Park for a rematch with Westhampton on Sunday at 5 p.m.

Pierson Track Athletes End Season

The East Hampton girls track team closed out a successful season with a handful of athletes, including Pierson’s Allura Leggard and Hannah Jungck, competing in the Suffolk County Individual Championships over the weekend. None of the Lady Bonacker athletes qualified for states, bringing the season to a close.

Jungck, a sophomore, was a member of the 4×800-meter relay team, which finished in 13th place with a time of 10:07.40. She also ran the 2,000-meter steeplechase and placed 17th in 7:53.80.

Leggard, a freshman, ran as a member of the 4×100-meter relay team, which placed 14th with a time of 51.54 seconds.

Community Rowing  Open House

Sag Harbor Community Rowing will host an open house and new member orientation on Saturday, June 14, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at its rowing facility at Cove Park in Sag Harbor. Cove Park is located off Redwood Road next to Jerry’s Marina and across from WLNG Radio.

This event is free and open to all. There will be mini “learn to row” clinics and on-water demonstrations. Registration forms for camp and seasonal membership will be accepted at this time. Instructors will be on hand to answer questions and tour the facility.

 May Sailing Series Concludes

Winds gusted across the bay last Wednesday, May 28, as the Breakwater Yacht Club concluded its May Sailing Series in dramatic fashion. When the spray settled, Wayne and Carol Morse had sailed Roxanne to a win with a corrected time of 32 minutes and 5 seconds. Bud Rogers, aboard Big Boat, finished second in 33:11 and George Martin, aboard Osprey, finished third in 33:15.
