Southampton Man Arrested in Fatal Cycling Accident


A 21 year-old man was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated after he allegedly struck and killed cyclist Friday evening on County Road 39 in Southampton.

According to Southampton Town Police, Jesse Werner Steudte, of Southampton was charged around 6:28 p.m. after police said he struck Neil S. Fyfe, a caddie at the Sebonack Golf Club, while Mr. Fyfe was cycling across County Road 39 in a crosswalk. Mr. Steudte was driving eastbound in his 1990 Jeep at the time of the accident.

Southampton Town Police, the New York State Police Forensic ID & Collision Reconstruction Unit, The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, and the Southampton & North Sea Fire Department responded to the scene of the accident. Police said civilians in the area immediately began performing CPR on Mr. Fyfe, who was transported to Southampton Hospital by Southampton Volunteer Ambulance where he was pronounced dead. Mr. Steudte was treated for minor injuries at the scene and arrested.

As of Tuesday, Mr. Steudte was being held at the Suffolk County Jail in Riverside in lieu of $25,000 cash bail following his arraignment before Southampton Town Justice Edward Burke, Sr. on Saturday. Pending the results of blood alcohol tests, the prosecution said Mr. Steudte could face additional charges.
