Ever wonder why oysters have a reputation as an aphrodisiac? Blame it on Italian lothario and adventurer Giacomo Casanova.
Bon vivant through and through, Casanova claimed to eat 50 oysters for breakfast every day, crediting them for his endless energy and, of course, his libido.
While science doesn’t necessarily back his claim, the sheer sensuality of eating oysters may make the mollusks a go-to for romance. And later this month, Southold Bay Oysters is putting that theory to the test, with its Valentine’s Shindig Shuck Box.
“Shuck an oyster and see where the night takes you,” a press release said. “Southold Bay Oysters has the perfect Valentine’s gift for the oyster lover in your life. Our Valentine Shindig Shuck Box includes the recently launched local Mattitaco Tropical Thunder Hot Sauce and an easy-to-make spicy recipe for ‘Tropical Thunder Valentine Shindigs.’”
The one-stop shop for any oyster aficionado or amateur includes two dozen Southold Shindig Oysters, grown right in Southold Bay, and a stainless steel Plymouth-style shucking knife with instructions.
It wouldn’t be complete without the oyster farm’s new hot sauce — Mattitaco’s Tropical Thunder, which packs a powerful punch that pairs perfectly with briny winter oysters — and a recipe for “Tropical Thunder Valentine Shindigs,” all delivered in an insulated, reusable cooler with a front pocket to carry essentials, or your shucking knife.
“Try something different this Valentine’s Day,” the release said, “and impress that special someone with the gift of oysters — and spice things up.”
The Valentine’s Shindig Shuck Boxes are available online for $49 and include free local pickup in Southold, or overnight delivery in the New York tri-state area for a fee. For more information, visit southoldbayoysters.com.
