The Shelter Island Friends of Music will return with a live music performance on Saturday, November 6, at 7 p.m., at the Shelter Island Presbyterian Church.

Featured musicians are the Merz Trio, first-prize winners of the 2021 Naumburg Chamber Music Competition. The piano trio will perform its “Quiet Cities” program, a uniquely varied and enchanting program, in which each segment — from Hildegard von Bingen to Haydn, Alma Mahler to Alban Berg — evokes its enveloping private world. The program ends with Brahms’ magnificent B Major Trio, paired with Schumann’s beloved “Widmung” — two familiar works that nonetheless capture perfectly the imaginative fantasy that pervades the rest of the program.

The concert is the 44-year-old organization’s first since February 2020. A complete season will follow in 2022. There is no admission charge, but donations are appreciated. A reception with the musicians follows the concert. Masks are required during the concert, and social distancing is recommended at the reception. Shelter Island Presbyterian Church is at 32 North Ferry Road (Route 114), Shelter Island.
