New York Secretary of State Cesar A. Perales will visit the Town of East Hampton’s Town Hall on Thursday, September 5 at 10 a.m. and receive a status update from Supervisor Bill Wilkinson on restructuring designed to make local government more efficient. The town received a $536,425 award from the New York Department of State’s Local Government Performance and Efficiency Program (LGPEP) this past June as part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s agenda to improve efficiency and reduce the cost of government, at all levels.

“It is especially gratifying for the team at East Hampton to be recognized for our work by Secretary Perales and New York’s Department of State,” said Wilkinson in a press release issued this week. “This recognition rewarded a behavior that is not only necessary at times of fiscal distress but is required to sustain our future financial success. As a town, we are elated to have a visit from the Secretary of State.”

“The Town of East Hampton has made a wise investment in the future of reducing expenditures, which will ultimately provide savings for the town’s taxpayers,” said Perales. “The New York Department of State commends East Hampton’s leadership for their innovative thinking, which will vastly improve their communities.”

A competitive program, LGPEP rewards local governments for undertaking significant and innovative actions that reduce the property tax burden confronting residents. The Town of East Hampton implemented a comprehensive organizational restructuring of town government, downsizing 26 separate departments into 13 departments through attrition, staff reduction and consolidation of functions.

Recognized actions under the award must have been fully implemented after January 1, 2010. Awards are capped at $5 million and the award funding may be used for any general municipal purpose. The LGPEP awards will be distributed in three equal payments over three years subject sustaining the annual fiscal impact of the project on the municipality.
