U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer last week announced his opposition to President-elect Donald Trump’s appointment of Jeff Sessions as attorney general. The former Alabama senator has been criticized for his opposition to a number of civil rights initiatives.
“Senator Jeff Sessions is a colleague and a friend. We have worked closely together on a number roof different issues, particularly trade, over our years of service in the Senate together,” Mr. Schumer said in a release.
But after reviewing Mr. Sessions’s responses during his recent confirmation hearing, Mr. Schumer said he would not be able to support his appointment. “I am not confident in Senator Sessions’s ability to be a defender of the rights of all Americans.”
