School News: Olympians Place Second, Matthers Named Valedictorian, Bennett Awarded

Pierson Olympians Place 2ndat North Shore Math Invitational

On Friday, April 5, members of the Pierson Middle School Math Olympians — led by teacher Chase Mallia — attended the 1st Annual North Shore Math Invitational, competing in two teams of five against 210 of the brightest math students on Long Island. The event included individual, team and mixed group competition rounds along with an engineering related STEM challenge. One of Pierson’s teams placed second in the STEM challenge, building the second tallest tower that could hole the required weight in the time allotted.

Mathers Named Valedictorian at University of San Fransisco

Katherine Claire Matthers, a Pierson graduation and Sag Harbor native, has earned the title of Valedictorian at the University of San Francisco McLaren School of Management. Ms. Matthers is also the recipient of the Dean’s Medal of Excellence and the A.A. Berti Undergraduate Award, presented to the graduating senior who has earned the highest record of scholarship in the School of Management.

Bennett Receives Award for Academic Excellence 

Duncan Bennett, of Sag Harbor, has received the SUNY Oneonta 2016-2017 Susan Sutton Smith Award for academic excellence. To be eligible for the award, a student must be a freshman, sophomore or junior with a grade-point average of 3.9 or higher.

Mr. Bennett, who is majoring in Communication Studies, received a certificate, a gift card to the campus bookstore, and an invitation to attend the annual Susan Sutton Smith Lecture and reception. Dr. Tracy Betsinger, associate professor of biological anthropology, delivered this year’s Susan Smith Lecture titled, “Babies Are Us: What Can We Learn from Fetuses and Infants from History and Prehistory,” on Tuesday, April 9 in the Otsego Grille, Morris Conference Center on campus.

Denardo Named to Dean’s List

Georgia Denardo, of Sag Harbor, was named to the Dean’s List for the Fall 2018 semester at SUNY Morrisville where she is majoring in the Liberal Arts & Sciences — Humanities & Social Sciences program.
