As Scarlett Rose prepares for a significant expansion of their Division Street salon, owner and head stylist Annie Kim reflects on what has made her business a success over the course of nearly six years. She didn’t get into the industry until the end of her 20s when she left her home in South Korea, and her career as an office manager, to come to the East End where her aunt has a nail salon in Greenport. Sharing that she is lucky to have had this opportunity, women’s beauty has long been a passion for Kim.
“I was thinking about only nails at first,” Kim says of learning the trade from her aunt and getting her cosmetology license. “I got into hair, and luckily got my first job in Sag Harbor. I worked for different hair salons and I loved it. I learned very fast and had a talent for it. I always wanted to have my own business and was very lucky to get this little place in Sag Harbor.”
That little place is Scarlett Rose, which Kim opened in June 2012. Four years ago, she had the opportunity to bring Aveda products to the East End and become a certified Aveda salon, currently the only one on the South Fork. Embracing the lifestyle and experience of the luxury beauty and wellness brand, Kim explains it’s about more than great hair.
“The Aveda mission is not just about beauty,” Kim says. “Everyone is looking for wellness, healthy eating, and organic products. It’s such a big, noticeable brand. They are environmentally friendly, and do a lot of charitable work for clean water.”
Providing Aveda’s signature aromatic hair and nail rituals, Kim aims to offer an experience, rather than just a service, to her clients. She says this is the most successful decision she has made for her business, and as a result she attracts clients from western Long Island and New York City, in addition to her beloved local clientele. “When I opened the salon in Sag Harbor, it was honestly for the local people,” Kim says. “I’m not looking for high-end or famous clients. That is wonderful and great, but for me I am so happy when clients come in, see each other, and know each other.”
On the pulse of what locals want and what is trending in the beauty world, Kim says right now everyone wants a natural look in hair and makeup. She notes undone, beachy waves as a popular style, and painted hair in the form of balayage to create a natural sun kissed look. The same goes for wedding up-dos; women are trading in traditional, structured looks for more romantic, loose hairstyling and braids. “They want something that looks like a part of themselves,” Kim explains. “No bright red or purple like in the city. Sag Harbor especially is looking for something natural. That’s not going to change.”
With the expansion, Kim looks forward to being a one-stop shop for the people who live in the Hamptons year-round. Until now the salon operated on the first floor providing hair and nail treatments to clients. In addition to Aveda, she offers Oway Organic Way products that are ammonia-free and made with certified organic ingredients. Over the years she has revamped and updated the salon with the help of her husband, contractor Alex Macias. Now, the new expansion into the renovated second floor makes room for additional services like skincare and body treatments, micro blading, and eyelash extensions.
Aware that women have a desire to look and feel great, Kim says she is eager to continue serving those needs and bringing out the individual beauty of those that walk through the doors at Scarlett Rose. She is also looking to hire a masseuse, esthetician, and more to join her team now as well. Of her current staff, she beams with pride as she says many have been there from the beginning. “I have the most amazing staff,” she shares, adding that she often receives compliments from clients when she is away. “They’re like extended family, and my clients feel that too.”
