The Bridgehampton Fire Department was called to 130 Town Line Road in Wainscott shortly after 1 p.m. on Friday, December 9, where a one-story, wood-frame summer cottage was found fully engulfed by fire.
With backup from the East Hampton Fire Department, firefighters quickly brought the fire under control. A rapid intervention team from the Sag Harbor Fire Department was called in, and the North Sea Fire Department provided a large water tanker.
Firefighters remained at the scene until after 3 p.m., spraying water on a large above-ground propane tank to keep it cool. The tank’s pressure-relief valve had released, as it is designed to do when a tank overheats, but the valve remained stuck for some time.
The Southampton Town fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.
Bonnie Michelle Cannon, the executive director of the Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center, was recently appointed by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone to the county’s African American Advisory Board.
