The American Heart Association has named Pierson High School teacher Sue Denis as a 2015 Heart Saver of the Year. On June 4, Ms. Denis was accompanied to New York City by five of her students to accept her award, which recognizes select volunteers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help save lives from cardiac arrest or by helping to strengthen the chain of survival. For her part, Ms. Denis created a CPR training course at the high school. Since the program’s inception — 21 years ago — Denis has certified more than 250 Sag Harbor students as CPR instructors and trained more than 2,500 in American Heart Association CPR. More than 20 of these students have used the skill to save a life.
“It was a great honor to receive the AHA Heartsaver Award for teaching CPR at Pierson,” said Ms. Denis.
