A championship parade sped down Main Street in Sag Harbor Friday evening as the Pierson softball team returned from Port Jefferson with a 10-8 victory and the Suffolk County Class C title in hand.

The Lady Whalers defeated Port Jeff, 2-0, in a best-of-three-game series and will play East Rockaway from Nassau County for the Long Island Class C Championship at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue on Thursday, June 2 at 4:30 p.m. The game will double as a New York State Southeast Regional semifinal with the winner advancing to play a regional final at either Hofstra University or St. Joe’s on June 4 with a berth in the state final four on the line.

Pierson on Friday was led by the continued emergence of sophomore pitcher Annabelle Schroeder, who tossed seven complete innings for her second consecutive playoff victory. Junior outfielder Cali Cafiero went 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBIs and a run scored, while Leigh Hatfield was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored as well.

Pierson trailed 4-0 early in the game but claimed the lead for good with a seven-run fifth inning.

“The girls played well from start to finish, backing each other up and motivating each other to finish the game on top,” head coach Shakoya Davis said. “This season has been a journey, and I couldn’t be more proud of how far we’ve come as a team, as a program.”
