By the end of the second inning against winless Stony Brook on Monday, the Pierson softball team had worked an unimaginable 16 walks and posted a 14-0 lead that never vanquished in route to a 20-1 victory that had to be shortened to five innings because of the mercy rule.

The win was a bounce back for the Lady Whalers (13-4), who last Friday lost an 8-7 heartbreaker to first-place Center Moriches.

Pierson beat Southampton, 6-1, on Tuesday and will close out the regular season today, May 8, at home against Hampton Bays at 4:30 p.m. Kasey Gilbride and Emma Romeo, the only seniors on this year’s team, will be honored before the action starts later today.

The Lady Whalers took Center Moriches (15-1) to extra innings last Friday, but ultimately lost in the bottom of the ninth on a walk-off doubled by Erin Copozzi that scored Caroline Casey with the winning run. Pierson had taken a 7-6 lead in the fifth inning, only to watch the lead disappear in the bottom of the seventh, where the Lady Red Devils forced extra innings.

Sam Duchemin pitched well, despite picking up the loss, and also had a three-run homer during the fifth-inning comeback.

The softball team finds itself in a similar situation to the Whalers baseball team in that the other Class C schools in Suffolk County may not qualify for the postseason. Southold-Greenport (3-13) and Stony Brook (0-15) reside in the cellar of League V and would have to appeal Section XI, the governing body of Suffolk County athletics, for a spot in the playoffs.

There are no Class C schools in Nassau County either, so Pierson would advance directly to a New York State Regional Final on Saturday, June 7 at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championship will be at Moreau Park in South Glens Falls on June 14.
