The Pierson PTSA sponsored a Zoom Meet the Candidates debate on Tuesday, June 2, between the five candidates running for three seats on the Sag Harbor School Board of Education — Brian DeSesa, Alex Kriegsman, Sandi Kruel, Ronald Reed and Helen Roussel.
The closed event was hosted by PTSA President Nancy Hallock and co-moderated by Express News Group Publishers Gavin and Kathryn G. Menu.
This slightly unusual Meet the Candidates forum was held in advance of an ongoing budget vote and trustee election taking place via absentee ballot this year with all ballots due in the district clerk’s office by 5 p.m. on June 9.
For anyone who has yet to receive a ballot who is registered to vote in the Sag Harbor Union Free School District, please contact the district clerk at 631-725-5300 or email her at email@example.com.
Voters will select three members of the Board of Education out of the five candidates and will also vote either in favor of or against a proposed $44.3 million budget, which represents a 3.37 percent increase in spending over the current spending plan with a tax levy increase of 2.71 percent — which is under the state tax levy cap. Voters will also weigh in on a second proposition, which, if approved, will allow the district to spend $56,068 from its existing Fleet Capital Reserve to purchase a school bus to replace an existing 10-year-old school bus. The funds, if approved, are already in a reserve account and a vote in favor of the proposition does not increase the district’s budget or tax levy for next year.
