The stage is set.
The Pierson/Bridgehampton girls basketball team won its 16th straight game on Tuesday, a 54-30 victory over Greenport/Southold, to set up a showdown with Mattituck in the final game of the regular season on Thursday, February 7, at 6:30 p.m. The Lady Whalers (15-0 in League VI, 16-3 overall) are already guaranteed at least a share of the league title, but a win on Thursday would give them the title outright. Mattituck has lost just one league game, a 47-38 setback against Pierson on January 14.
Pierson’s Katie Kneeland averaged 23 points per game in three victories over the last week, including 23 points to go with 10 rebounds in the win over Greenport/Southold on Tuesday. Chastin Giles scored 16 points on Tuesday, which followed a 22-point and 12-assist performance in a 64-34 win over Smithtown Christian on February 2. The Lady Whalers also knocked off Southampton, 46-25, on January 31.
The team’s seniors, including Kneeland, will be honored in a pre-game ceremony at Pierson High School on Thursday. The Lady Whalers will automatically be crowned Suffolk County champions since there are no other Class C schools in Suffolk County. They will compete in the overall Suffolk tournament with an opening game against Smithtown Christian, the automatic Class D champion, tentatively scheduled for Friday, February 15, at Centereach High School at 4:30 p.m.
