One team and a pair of individual runners were crowned cross country champions at the Section XI Championships at Sunken Meadow State Park on Thursday.

The Pierson girls cross country team successfully defended its Suffolk County Class D title by defeating Southold, 19-38. Penelope Greene won the 2.5-mile race — which included Class C runners as well — in 15.36.92, well ahead of Babylon freshman Kayla Hayes, who finished nearly a minute after Greene.

Pierson’s Brooke Esposito was the runner-up to Greene in the ‘D’ race, finishing in 17:58.27. Hannah Ramundo (20:07.59) and Ava McKlvey (21:14.46) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Abby Sherwood (21:56.88) finished seventh and and Grace Flanagan (22:55.09) ninth.

Jackie Amato of Westhampton Beach, daughter to Pierson boy’s cross country head coach Joe Amato, then won the county Class B race, which directly followed the C/D race. She crossed the finish line in 15:20.97 to earn her first ever county title after finishing as runner-up last year to Mount Sinai’s Sarah Connelly.

East Hampton, looking to defend its ‘B’ title from 2019, wound up taking third place behind new county champion Sayville, who finished with 46 points. Bayport-Blue Point finished second with 61 points, just four points ahead of the Bonackers. Dylan Cashin took the top placement for East Hampton, finishing third overall in 15:57.62.
