The Pierson boys basketball team clinched the League VIII title on Monday night with a 67-41 win at home over Greenport. Sophomore Wilson Bennett led all scorers with 23 points, while Henry Brooks added 12.
Since it was the last home game of the regular season, the Whalers celebrated their senior class, which includes Brooks, Nick Egbert, Harry Cowen, Peter Schaefer and Jessup Kunzeman, and later turned their attention to closing out a perfect league season at Smithtown Christian, a game that occurred after press time on Wednesday.
Pierson now pivots to the Suffolk County Class C playoffs and a likely re-match with rival Southold, which dropped both its games to Pierson this season, but had seven league wins as of Tuesday to earn a spot in the postseason. Greenport and the Ross School are also Class C schools, but both will finish well below the .500 mark generally required by Section XI, the governing body of high school athletics in Suffolk County, for an automatic playoff berth.
The Class C final is tentatively scheduled for Friday, February 14, at East Hampton High School at 7 p.m., with the winner tentatively scheduled to play for a Long Island title on March 10 at Centereach High School
