The Sag Harbor Whalers of the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League kicked off their 11thseason this week with a pair of games at Mashashimuet Park, including an 8-3 victory over Shelter Island in the opener on Sunday, June 3. Nick Thornquist (McLennan CC) had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Paul Wetmore (Western New England) was the Whalers’ opening day pitcher and went four innings, allowing four hits and three runs, to pick up the victory.

Sag Harbor returned to the park on Monday but fell, 9-4, to the visiting Westhampton Aviators. Thornquist, Harry Hegeman (Yale) and Leo Horacio (Northwest Florida State) had two hits apiece for the Whalers, who let the game slip away in a five-run fifth inning for Westhampton.

The Whalers will face the Long Island Road Warriors at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue on Thursday, June 7, and will be back at Mashashimuet Park for a home game against the North Fork Ospreys on Sunday, June 10, at 5 p.m.
