obit Monica MitchellMonica Rockford Mitchell of New York, NY died peacefully on April 9, 2016 in Southampton. She was born on September 10, 1927 in Springfield, Illinois. She is survived by her two children and five grandchildren; her daughter Katherine Louise Mitchell and her three children Brook, Sean and Denis Hartnett and her son, Wilmot Brookings Mitchell 3rd, his wife Renee E. Mitchell and their two children Hugh and Alice Mitchell. She is predeceased by her husband Wilmot B. Mitchell 2nd in 1970.

She was the daughter of Mary Ruffo and Antonio Rocceforte of Montevago, Sicily and was one of six children. After graduating from Lanphier High School and attending St. John’s School of Nursing in Springfield, IL, she enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a Navy Nurse Corps officer from 1953 until 1967 when she was honorably discharged. She rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and received numerous commendations while serving at duty stations that included Bremerton Naval Hospital, Naval Hospital Guam, Naval Hospital Yokosuka, Japan and Great Lakes Naval Hospital where she met her husband. Following his untimely death, she returned to work as a nurse at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital where she remained until her retirement in 1988.

A compassionate healer, loving mother, grandmother and friend, she maintained a timeless style and passion for interior decorating, reading, theatre, spending time with friends and family and enjoying life in New York City. A service will be held at St. Andrews Roman Catholic Church in Sag Harbor, on Saturday April, 23 at 10:30 a.m. with burial and a graveside ceremony at Willow Brook cemetery in Westport, Connecticut on April 24 at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to Hope for the Warriors http://www.hopeforthewarriors.org/ or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, http://www.nationalmssociety.org/Donate.
