Led by a talented starting five and a potent pair of scorers, the Pierson/Bridgehampton girls basketball team was flying high following a 71-34 thumping of Miller Place to open the season on Thursday, December 1.
Senior Nia Dawson and sophomore Katie Kneeland scored 20 points apiece and Lily Kot chipped in with nine points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Whalers in their non-league opener.
The team on Tuesday was brought down to earth by defending League VII champion Mattituck and its star, Liz Dwyer, who had 28 points and eight rebounds in a 61-50 home opener.
Kot scored 18 points to lead all Pierson scorers as the Lady Whalers kept the game close with Mattituck clinging to a slim 21-20 lead at halftime. The Tuckers ultimately rode a big third quarter to victory, outscoring Pierson 20-10.
Kneeland scored 13 points for Pierson and Dawson added 11. Sophomore Celia Barranco, who grabbed 10 rebounds in her varsity debut against Miller Place, had six points against Mattituck.
Pierson will continue with league play with a game at home against Center Moriches on Thursday, December 8, at 6:15 p.m. The non-league schedule continues with another home game against Shoreham Wading River on Monday, December 12, at 4:30 p.m.
