The Pierson golf team squeaked past rival Southampton at the Noyac Golf Club on Tuesday, winning 5.5-3.5 to knock off the visiting Mariners, who are playing without Christian Oakley, their injured top golfer and defending League VII individual champion from a year ago.
Pierson, which split the league title with Southampton and East Hampton last year, improved to 2-1 in League VIII, its only blemish a 7-2 loss to first-place Westhampton Beach on Thursday, September 24.
The Whalers were scheduled to face William Floyd on Tuesday, September 29, and will host rival East Hampton at the Noyac Golf Club on Thursday, October 1, at 3:30 p.m. Westhampton (3-0) will come to Noyac for a big rematch on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
Playing in the top spot against Southampton on Monday, Pierson’s Jack Brown shot a 37 to beat Southampton’s Tim Kreymborg (40) to earn a point. Tyler LaBorne (44), E.J. Burke (51) and Thomas Brooks (50) also picked up wins for the Whalers, whose total team score of 230 was matched by Southampton. The three points given each match to the winning team, therefore was split down the middle, with each team earning 1.5 points.
