The Fourth Annual Jim Federico Memorial Blood Drive will take place on Friday, June 14, from noon to 8 p.m. at the Sag Harbor Fire Department headquarters on Brick Kiln Road in Sag Harbor. Co-sponsored by the Sag Harbor Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the Federico family, the blood drive was launched four years ago in honor of Jim Federico, who passed away in 2015 just four months after his 80thbirthday.

Mr. Federico suffered from MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome), and later, acute leukemia, and received a total of 93 units of blood and platelets over the last two years of his life. “If it were not for the generosity of people who donate at blood drives and hospitals, we never would have been able to enjoy watching him celebrate his 80th birthday surrounded by his grandchildren,” said his daughter, Karin Schroeder. “My family has once again joined with the Sag Harbor Volunteer Ambulance Corp to sponsor their February Blood Drive. This is our way of both paying it forward, and showing our gratitude to those who gave.”

In the last three blood drives, a total of 343 pints of blood have been collected. The family encourages those able to donate Friday or at another location out of the area during the month of June to share their experience on social media with the hashtag #APintForJim. The person who donates the 93rdpint during Friday’s blood drive will receive a special gift and there will be door prizes and coupons for “a pint for a pint” — a pint can earn a donor a coupon for a pint of beer or soup from a local business. Local businesses have also donated soups, chowders, sandwiches, wraps, bagels, hot dogs, brownies, cookies and more to offer sustenance for those donating to help someone in need down the road.
