Will Fujita, a music teacher in the Sag Harbor School District, has been tapped as the new head coach of the Pierson boys basketball team. His appointment was made official at the Sag Harbor Board of Education meeting on June 3.
John “Woody” Kneeland was also appointed to a new position, replacing Kevin Barron as head coach of the girls varsity basketball team. Barron stepped aside for family reasons, while Hank Katz, the previous boys basketball coach, will focus on work in the weight room across all sports, district athletic director Eric Bramoff said.
“The line of thinking was both these coaches have worked in our programs for a few years,” Bramoff said about Fujita and Kneeland, who were the junior varsity coaches in their respective programs for the past several years. “When the positions became available, it was a no-brainer for me. I’m highly confident in both of these appointments,” he continued. “I think we’re going to have a nice basketball season. Both these coaches have taken a year-round approach already and have been working with basketball players from seventh grade up to the juniors.”
Bramoff said replacements at the junior varsity level would be made sometime this summer.
