The Pierson-Bridgehampton field hockey team claimed a statement early-season victory Monday with a dominant second half performance and 6-2 win over host Southampton, which ended the Lady Whalers’ season in the Suffolk County Class C final last year.

The Lady Mariners are now a Class B school, but still compete with Pierson for supremacy in Division III.

Freshman Paige Schaefer had a breakthrough game for the Lady Whalers, scoring three goals with an assist to lead a five-goal second-half barrage.

“Paige plays with a ton of heart,” said first-year head coach Bethany Semlear. “She has tremendous drive and never gives up. Today, she truly found her game and played amazing.”

Cali Cafiero had two goals in the victory, and Ana Sherwood scored once.

Facing Bayport/Blue Point on Saturday, Cafiero scored a first half goal and Sherwood broke a 1-1 tie in overtime to win the game off a penalty shot.

Charlotte Johnson and Sheila Mackey, who are sharing time in goal, combined to make six saves.

Next up for the Lady Whalers (3-1) is a game at Comsewogue on Friday, September 25, at 4:30 p.m., followed by a home match against perennial powerhouse and unbeaten Miller Place on Monday, September 28, at 4:30 p.m.
