The Sag Harbor community and beyond are rallying around the Whelan family after Shannon Whelan, a Sag Harbor native and mother of three, died suddenly from cardiac arrest in Sydney, Australia, several days ago.
A GoFundMe page has been set up by a friend for the Whelan family to receive donations meant to ease their struggles. More than $23,000 of a $30,000 goal has been raised over a nine-day period, according to the website.
“Shannon’s entire family continues to be moved and comforted by the outpouring of love, support and the generosity of all those who loved Shannon,” a family friend wrote via GoFundMe on behalf of Mary and David Whelan. “We are continuing to raise funds which the family will be able to apply to medical expenses, travel and logistical expenses and costs that may be associated with future visits to see Shannon’s children in months and years to come. Thank you for your generosity, prayers and love.”
According to the GoFundMe page, funeral services for Ms. Whelan will be held Saturday, January 19, at St. Andrew Church in Sag Harbor, with the time to be announced soon.
