The Suffolk County Veterans Runs Series (SCVRS) includes nine runs held during the summer and fall months in honor of veterans, including Jordan’s Run in Sag Harbor, which will be held on Sunday, July 28, in honor of Lance Corporal Jordan C. Haerter, a United States Marine and native of Sag Harbor who died heroically in Iraq in 2012. Four runs — The Cpl. Christopher G. Scherer Memorial 4-mile Run/Walk, the Mission 22 Dog Tag Run, the Navy SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy. 4-mile Run/Walk and the Airborne 5K Run Walk — have already taken place. Jordan’s Run, which is also a 5K, is the last event of the summer and will be followed by the Team RWB/Poject9Line Heart of an Eagle 5K in East Islip on September 8, the E.O.C of Suffolk 5K for Fighters Race Supporting Female Veterans in Patchogue on October 5, the Catholic Health Services’ Suffolk County Marathon, also in Patchogue, on October 27, and the Hope for The Warriors Long Island Run for The Warriors in Lindenhurst on November 9.
Organizers of the series give out a “Challenge Coin” to participants who run in seven out of the nine runs of the series. Include among those who finished all nine races last year: Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and JoAnn Lyles, Jordan’s mom.
