A Summer on the Run: Picnics and Drinks To Go


Pardon the cliché, but the summer of 2020 so far has been a season like no other. For those lucky enough to spend July and August on the East End, our “new normal” — to use another cliché — thankfully includes a bevy of great takeout options, scenic locations to picnic and even cocktails to go. Here are a few of our favorite spots to “dine out” this summer, along with some to-go cocktails to help take the edge off.


Shadmoor State Park – Montauk

Reaching the ocean bluffs in Montauk requires a bit of a hike, so don’t pack too heavy, perhaps just a bagged lunch from The Montauk Market. The reward is breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and plenty of open space at the end of the trail. Parking is available in a lot off Montauk Highway.

John Steinbeck Park – Sag Harbor

The East End’s newest public park was to have benches and picnic tables this summer, but now you will need to bring a blanket. Keeping your distance from others won’t be a problem and sunsets over Sag Harbor Cove and the Lance Corporal Jordan C. Haerter Veterans Memorial Bridge provide a remarkable summer vista. Takeout from the tiki taco bar at nearby K Pasa is highly recommended.

The Great Lawn – Westhampton Beach

The summer of 2020 is a great time to visit the newly-designed Main Street in Westhampton Beach, followed by a picnic lunch on the Great Lawn, which includes six acres of open-space preserve and huge trees that offer plenty of shade.

Your Own Backyard

The safest and most visited picnic spot these past few months has, of course, been our own backyards. Grab some takeout from your favorite restaurant, maybe even some of the to-go cocktails featured on this page, turn up the music and soak in what’s left of summer.


The Frozen Margarita

Bobby Van’s, Bridgehampton

More than any other cocktail, the famed bar at Bobby Van’s has been sending out to-go frozen margaritas this summer, made with Casamigos blanco tequila and fresh lime juice.

The Garden Gimlet 

First & South, Greenport

This fruit-forward gimlet is made with Hendricks gin, fresh lime juice, Rocky Mountain blackberry liqueur, blueberries, cucumber and a plethora of mint from the restaurant’s garden. 

Watermelon and Spicy Cucumber Margaritas

Lulu Kitchen & Bar, Sag Harbor

This classic summer cocktail with the addition of fresh juices in cute to-go bottles.
