Debra Gildersleeve has no issue mixing modern design with country-style aesthetics. The owner and lead designer for Renee’s in Mattituck said lighting is one of the most crucial elements in a home but is often overlooked. She also believes lighting fixtures, and a growing trend toward the modern, can provide the perfect complement to a variety of interior styles.

“I find clients are interested in an eclectic yet tasteful mixture of home furnishings and décor,” Gildersleeve said. “One of our favorite brands to work with, Four Hands, crafts these modern and elegant statement pieces that have an industrial feel to them. They look beautiful over a large farmhouse style table in the dining room or in the living room over a rustic driftwood coffee table and slipcover sofa. This gives coastal décor a tasteful, modern look.”

The artisan lighting fixtures produced by the Texas-based company Four Hands, which shares Gildersleeve’s passion for mixing materials and design aesthetics, combining new and old, soft and hard, modern and antique, include products that are refined and classic. Here are three favorites available at Renee’s with additional comments from the North Fork designer.
