Making jam began as a hobby for Joe and Jessica Cipro, a food-loving couple that splits their time between Manhattan and East Hampton, but the chef and his editor, photographer wife, quickly discovered a market for their organic product and officially launched their company Memorial Day weekend.
Hampton Jam is made from only organic ingredients, originating from organic purveyors. The Cipro’s fruit spreads contain only what you would expect: fruit, spices, sugar and lemon, and the couple is committed to ensuring no genetically modified or artificial ingredients make their way into the saucepot. It’s a commitment that stems from Joe’s long career in the culinary arts from his time as a sous chef at the venerable East Hampton restaurant, Della Femina, the Topping Rose House in Bridgehampton, and Little Red in Southampton. The chef struck out on his own as a private chef in 2013.
After debuting samples of their jam at January’s “Love Bites” event, which benefited the Sag Harbor-based Katy’s Courage non-profit, Hampton Jam’s first round of flavors — blueberry, apple and tart cherry, and strawberry lemonade, will be available for purchase at the Havens Farmers Market on Shelter Island and the Hampton Bays Farmers’ Market through Labor Day.
According to Jessica, the couple is just beginning to have fun with flavor combinations, and hopes to introduce more varieties this summer.
“We want to put a new twist on classic jam flavors,” said Chef Cipro.
