Garden of Eve Organic Farm and Market in Riverhead will host its 16th Annual Long Island Garlic Festival September 14 and 15. The two-day celebration highlights the beloved onion species in every way imaginable — can you say garlic ice cream? — and includes activities for the entire family.
Upon entering the festival, you will be met with innovative garlic-inspired foods, various garlic contests, cooking demos featuring creative garlic recipes, a craft fair, live music, farm tours, and garlic, garlic and more garlic.
This year, family favorite contests return. Children ages 10 to 18 can enter in the Junior Garlic Iron Chef Competition taking place on both Saturday and Sunday. Teams of up to four people will have 30 minutes in front of a live audience to create a pasta sauce that showcases farm fresh garlic from the Garden of Eve. Assorted produce from the farm will be provided and contestants may bring a maximum of three “secret ingredients” of their own. Sauces will be judged on taste, showcasing of garlic, use of produce, and originality. The winning team will be given an official Junior Garlic Iron Chef plaque to honor their achievement in becoming Junior Garlic Iron Chefs.
Another highly anticipated event of the Garlic Festival is the Garlic Eating Contest, also held on both Saturday and Sunday. Contestants are challenged to peel and eat as many cloves of raw garlic as they can in two minutes. Spitting anything out or throwing up results in immediate disqualification, so this contest is not for the faint of heart (or stomach). Adding to the excitement, this year will feature the first ever “champions only” event for past Garlic Eating Contest champions and competitors. Early registration is recommended as contest is limited to 10 participants daily.
In addition to yearly garlic competitions, garlic appreciators will be able to sample tasty and exotic garlic foods, attend a “How to Grow Garlic” workshop with Chris Kaplan-Walbrecht, shoot garlic out over the farm at the new Garlic Shooting Station, buy farm-fresh garlic to eat or buy, and more.
Tickets are available at the door and include unlimited access to all of the garlic-y activities. For more information, call (631) 722-8777 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
