If there’s one thing that the fall season calls for it’s apples. Gala, Honeycrisp, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith the list goes on and on. To ring in the apple season, Harbes Family Farm will host its annual Apple Festival on Saturday and Sunday, September 8 and 9, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Harbes Orchard in Riverhead.

Throughout the day, various apple-themed games will be played like apple cider donut eating contests, apple rolling competitions and more. You can also go apple picking on the 15-arce orchard featuring the best apples of the season.

Early September, after all, is when six different types of apples ripen. The Ultima Gala apple, according to the Harbes website, is a great choice for snacking especially for picky eaters because of its mild flavor. It’s a bright yellow-red color. Similarly, the Gale Gala apple has a yellow-red color and was developed in New Zealand.

The Blondee apple is sweet and crunchy and, matching its name, is a nice yellow color. Ruby Mac, with no surprise, is a bright red apple that has a more tart flavor. The Zestar and Sansa apples both have sweet and acidic flavors to them.

Aside from apple-themed activities there will be pumpkin picking, hayrides, pony rides, vendors, additional children’s activities and free live music from The Como Brothers.
