Editorial: More Than Just a Holiday

In resort communities like those found on the East End of Long Island, Memorial Day weekend is often a time for celebration. It is the beginning of warmer weather, with weekends on the beach no longer a fantasy but a reality soon to be enjoyed and brings larger crowds and more profit to local businesses.

It is not because of these reasons that we observe on Monday, of course. Memorial Day very specifically is to remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives serving in the Armed Forces and, in Sag Harbor, it has not been very long since we attended a military funeral.

So on Monday, try not to forget what the day is meant to be about; attend a Memorial Day service or parade. Bow your head in remembrance for a family member or friend lost in the line of duty or just to honor all those we have lost.
