Editorial: Full Charge Ahead

The East Hampton Town Board is considering a second proposal by the Tesla company to install an electric vehicle charging station — at no cost to taxpayers — in a public parking lot in downtown Montauk. The proposal, less than a year since Tesla pitched having a Tesla-only charging station in the highly visible Kirk Park Beach parking lot on Montauk Highway, now includes charging stations that are universal to all electric vehicles in addition to stations compatible with just those manufactured by Tesla.

The reality is more and more drivers are switching to electric vehicles, and rightly so. As we ideally move further away from reliance on fossil fuels, tapping into energy resources derived from solar, wind and geothermal energy, investing in infrastructure will be critical to support residents and visitors who choose more environmentally sustainable forms of transportation.
