The East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton girls swim team is looking to carry over the success it saw in the condensed spring season with a handful of returning swimmers.
The Bonackers went 4-1 in League III, 5-1 overall, finishing second during the regular season to Sayville, and then finishing second again to Sayville at the League III Championships. They went on to have a solid showing at counties, finishing ninth, which included their first individual champion in quite some time in Summer Jones, who won the 50-yard freestyle.
Jones is not returning to the team this season, though, and Catalina Badilla, Kiara Bailey-Williams, Caroline Brown, Nicole Gutierrez and Stephanie Pallchisaca have all graduated as well.
But many of the team’s swimmers who all contributed to the team’s success last season are returning. That includes Jane Brierley, who was All-County and All-League, and All-League swimmers Ava Castillo, Emily Dyner, Lily Griffin and Camryn Hatch. Adding depth to the team this season are East Hampton freshmen Ashley Leon and Valeria Gutierrez, East Hampton eighth-grader Elizabeth Daniels and Pierson eighth-grader Lily Caplin.
“As always, the girls are excited for the season and are quickly becoming a close team,” head coach Craig Brierley said. “Our team leaders are our seniors — Emily Dyner, Julia Caldwell, Corrina Castillo, and Morgan Watrous — and they are doing a wonderful job so far in creating a culture for a successful season.”
Unlike this past spring, there will be a state meet this season at Ithaca College the weekend of November 19-20, so those girls who qualified for states but couldn’t compete or a state title last season will be able to do so this season.
East Hampton starts the season with a pair of non-league meets against Connetquot and Sachem North on September 14 and September 17, respectively. The league season begins September 24 when Bonac hosts reigning League III Champion Sayville at the East Hampton YMCA at 5 p.m.
