The Pierson girls cross country team hosted a youth run at Mashashimuet Park on Tuesday, where close to 30 children in grades three to six tackled a one-mile course through the park. Sixth-grader Sofia Mancino, 11, center, finished first with a time of 6:56.
Funds were raised for the girls cross country program and upcoming travel expenses, and a similar run will take place on September 29. The cross country team, which is expected to once again compete for League VIII and Suffolk County Class D titles, won its first match of the season, 17-48, over visiting Southold on September 8. Senior Hannah Jungck finished first overall with a time of 22:21 for the 3-mile course, while Caroline Jungck, Phoebe Miller, Blair Potter and Courtney Kinsella also scored points for the Lady Whalers.
The Pierson boys team also beat Southold, 20-42, with Jack Schleicher finishing second overall. Both the boys and girls teams, which generally compete together during the league season, will face Port Jefferson at Sunken Meadow State Park on Monday. The next and last home meet of the season will be Tuesday, September 29, against Shelter Island at 4 p.m.
