Denise Koegel (née Theinert), 64, of Merrick, passed away on September 10, 2018, at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre after a brief illness.
Ms. Koegel was born in East Meadow to William and Patricia Theinert. She graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1972 before going on to earn a Bachelor of Science and Master’s degrees in Mathematics and Secondary Education from Adelphi University in Garden City. Ms. Koegel was a math teacher for over 30 years at Hicksville and Syosset High School.
Ms. Koegel, whose family began coming to Sag Harbor in the 1950s, married Kevin Koegel on August 17, 1979. According to family, she enjoyed running, loved being near the ocean and caring for her family, friends and students. Ms. Koegel was also a longtime resident of Bay Point in the home previously owned by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, Kevin, children Christopher, Keri and Maureen, grandchildren Rebecca, Claire and Grace, and brother Jim. She is predeceased by her parents, William and Patricia and brother, Bruce. Following a memorial service earlier this month at Cure of Ars R.C. Church, Ms. Koegel was laid to rest at The Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury. In lieu of flowers, Ms. Koegel requested that memorial donations be made to The Stongpoint Theinert Ranch in New Mexico, the nonprofit created in memory of 1stLt. Joseph J. Theinert, Ms. Koegel’s nephew and a Shelter Island resident who was killed in 2010 during combat operations in Afghanistan.
