A temporary pedestrian bridge for U.S. Open spectators will be built over County Road 39 at the intersection of Tuckahoe Road on Wednesday night, necessitating the overnight closure of County Road 39 for eight hours, Southampton Town has announced.
The road will be closed between 9 p.m. Wednesday and 5 a.m. Thursday between Shrubland Road and Tuckahoe Lane while crews erect the temporary bridge, as has been the practice in the past when the U.S. Open has come to Shinnecock Hills. The town said in a news release electronic signs will help drivers identify a detour through the surrounding area.
Those who live in the vicinity of Greenfield Road and St. Andrews West will be permitted to enter the area during the road closure with proof of address, the town said.
The U.S. Open is planned for June 11 through June 17 at Shinnecock Hills. Several transportation-related changes are on the horizon in addition to the closure on Wednesday night into Thursday morning, such as the setup of a temporary Long Island Rail Road station at Stony Brook Southampton and staging for spectator parking offsite at Francis Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach with shuttle service to the golf course.
“The town has been working closely with Suffolk County, the State of New York and the U.S. Golf Association to plan for the event,” the town said in a statement. “There will be several road changes and a few road closures to accommodate buses that will be shuttling the thousands of spectators expected.”
