Chef Joe Smith Returns to Ram’s Head for 40th Anniversary

Joe Smith’s career began as a dishwasher for James and Linda Eklund at the Ram’s Head Inn on Shelter Island.

He was just a teenager.

His trajectory followed the Eklunds over the years at the Ram’s Head Inn, where he worked as sous chef and chef de cuisine, before chasing his culinary dreams to Wölffer Kitchen in Sag Harbor and The Frisky Oyster in Greenport.

Smith has returned to his original employ as executive chef at Ram’s Head — just in time for the Eklunds’ 40th anniversary at the resort, now listed for $9.75 million with Peter Humphrey of Douglas Elliman.

Built in 1929, the 90-year-old building on 4.3 acres is home to 22 rooms, an all-weather tennis court, a regulation-sized bocce court, a 110-seat restaurant and sufficient indoor-outdoor space for weddings, having played host to more than 800 over the past four decades.

Clocking in at 12,000 square feet, the three-story Colonial-style manor house also includes 5,000 square feet of unfinished basement space, deep-water docks, eight moorings and 800 feet of west-facing water frontage on Coecles Harbor.
