Brittany Carriero, who has served as principal of Pierson Middle School since 2018, will be named principal of Pierson High School on Thursday, September 10, the Sag Harbor School District announced.
In her new role, Ms. Carriero will also continue to serve as principal of the middle school and Laura Westhoff, a middle school math teacher, will be appointed as dean of the middle school. Both administrators will serve in those roles until a permanent assistant principal for the middle school is named.
School Board President Brian DeSesa said in a release that the district, which created separate high school and middle school principal positions in 2018, had decided to return to a system with a single principal and an assistant principal at the middle school this year after high school Principal Jeff Nichols was appointed superintendent of schools.
“We are very excited to begin the new school year with our full leadership team in place and to also welcome Ms. Westhoff to that team,” he said.
“I have worked closely with Ms. Carriero during her entire tenure in Sag Harbor,” added Mr. Nichols. “There is no better candidate to lead our secondary school through the challenges we are facing under a global pandemic. Her leadership experience, knowledge of our students and school community, and her genuine passion for education make her an ideal fit for our district.”
Prior to being appointed middle school principal, Ms. Carriero had served as middle school assistant principal since 2013. Before coming to Sag Harbor, she was a special education, physical education and middle school teacher at the New York City Lab School for Collaborative Studies. She earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Syracuse University, a master’s degree in education from New York University and her advanced certificate in educational leadership and supervision from Canisius College.
In her role as dean of the middle school, Ms. Westhoff will serve as a teacher on special assignment for the 2020-2021 school year. Since 2016, Ms. Westhoff has worked as a math teacher at the middle school. Before coming to Sag Harbor, she worked in various educational capacities in Westchester County, including as a leave replacement and building substitute for Valhalla Middle School. She holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematical science and English literature and rhetoric and a master’s degree in teaching, mathematics adolescence education from Binghamton University.
This fall, the School Board will launch a search for permanent middle school principal.
