The Pierson boys cross country team picked up a huge win at Mashashimuet Park on Tuesday, defeating Mattituck, 25-32, to improve to 2-1 in league competition. The team was led by Ben McErlean, who finished second overall with a time of 18:21. Peter Schaefer was the second Pierson finisher (4th overall) in 18:44, followed by Sage Witty (5thin 19:21), Hunter Hansen (6thin 19:21), Tom Schiavoni (8thin 19:42) and Julian Cheng (19:56).

“The athletes are working very hard and are beginning to see the benefits,” Pierson head coach Joe Amato said. “This was a big win for the program. The school has not defeated Mattituck in a number of years.”

The girls cross country team also raced against Mattituck, but had to forfeit the match because of low numbers. Still, sophomore Penelope Greene won the race in 20:33, while senior Caroline Jungck finished third in 21:07. Greene posted a time of 22:05.71 at the Suffolk County Coaches Invitational at Sunken Meadow on Saturday, which according to head coach Jim Kinnier is the 14thbest time in all of Suffolk County this year at that course and distance.

The cross country teams will host the Ross School on Tuesday, October 9, at 4 p.m.
