The Sag Harbor Lions Club will host the Andy’s Run for a Guide Dog 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, October 1, with check-in on Water Street beginning at 7:30 a.m. The race will begin at 8:30 a.m. This is the fourth year for the event, which is held in memory of Andy Neidnig, an athlete for the ages who lived in Sag Harbor and had a decorated career as a runner.

Registration for Andy’s Run, which is $25 in advance, can be done at You can also register on the day of the race for $30.

As for the name change of the race this year, Lions Club President Steve Espach said the club wanted everyone to know the purpose of the run.

“The bulk of the money we raise goes to sponsor the training of a service dog at the Guide Dog Foundation,” Espach said. “We also didn’t want to lose the original intent of the race, which was to honor the late long-time Sag Harbor resident and venerable competitive marathoner Andy Neidnig.”

A representative from the Guide Dog Foundation will be at the race to answer questions about the program.  The Sag Harbor Community Food Pantry will also receive a donation to provide fresh holiday groceries to those in need.  Other funds raised go toward the Lions scholarships and to fund the Easter Egg Hunt.
