A Happy Ending

Southampton Town Police Officer Sherakhan Parker had just begun his shift two weeks ago when he received a report of a homeless man walking on Montauk Highway. Officer Parker later caught up with the man, Euripede Cruz, 60, in the Village of Quogue.

Realizing Mr. Cruz was hungry, Officer Parker took him to a store to buy him some food and water and tried to pry more information out of him. A Quogue Village officer, Theodore Richert, stayed with Mr. Cruz while Officer Parker entered Mr. Cruz’s name into a database of people who had been reported missing locally. Acting on a hunch that Mr. Cruz may have been reported missing elsewhere, Officer Parker also searched for his name on internet.

Sure enough a report came back that Mr. Cruz had been reported missing from Waterbury, Connecticut, by his family in 2008. Officer Parker then contacted the Waterbury Police Department, and detectives there were able to provide him with a family contact.

Officer Parker then called the family to let them know he had found Mr. Cruz  on Long Island. His sister, Blanca Cruz, of Waterbury, who told the media her brother was suffering from schizophrenia, arrived in Quogue shortly before 9 p.m. that evening to pick up her brother.
