The Bridgehampton Fire Department was called to 130 Town Line Road in Wainscott shortly after 1 p.m. on Friday, December 9, where a one-story, wood-frame summer cottage was found fully engulfed by fire.

With backup from the East Hampton Fire Department, firefighters quickly brought the fire under control. A rapid intervention team from the Sag Harbor Fire Department was called in, and the North Sea Fire Department provided a large water tanker.

Firefighters remained at the scene until after 3 p.m., spraying water on a large above-ground propane tank to keep it cool. The tank’s pressure-relief valve had released, as it is designed to do when a tank overheats, but the valve remained stuck for some time.

The Southampton Town fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.
